Meet the Owners

In the summer of 2024, Kyle Butler and Amber Mitchell breathed new life into a empty, unassuming unit. Using Kyle's ability to build and fix anything, Amber's bold vision for what a new dance studio could look like, and the help of their families, they transformed it into something amazing. As with anything destined for greatness, the first year did not come without trials or challenges, but they were able to rise above all uncertainty and exceed expectations. The studio has quickly become a space for not only technical growth but for community, creativity, and purpose.

Now husband and wife, Kyle and Amber have used their complementary strengths to build a foundation grounded in shared ambition. As they look to the future, they remain committed to cultivating a lasting legacy—one defined by excellence, integrity, and a deep commitment to the well-being of every student who walks through their doors.

Amber Mitchell-Butler

Director

Growing up in central North Carolina, Amber Mitchell fell in love with dance at an early age. She began training and competing in all styles of dance including ballet, jazz, contemporary, hip hop, tap, musical theater, etc. while attending and competing with CC & Company Dance Complex. Under the ownership and direction of Christy Curtis, she had many amazing opportunities to work closely with world-renowned choreographers such as Sonya Tayeh, Mandy Moore, Al Blackstone, Martha Nichols, and more, beyond the walls of a convention ballroom. Amber also received mentorship from Melissa “MJ” Jackson, who offered invaluable knowledge and support through her adolescent training. From the age of 16, Amber has taught and choreographed for children of all ages and abilities. Amber favors choreographing “contemporary fusion” movement, and prides herself in her ability to showcase each dancer’s individual strengths. Her choreography has been seen at prestigious regional and national competition stages nationwide, going on to win many choreography, technique, and overall awards. Her students have been accepted into reputable post-grad programs and intensives, such as CLI Conservatory, Joffery, and more.

After teaching in Wilmington, NC and its surrounding areas for 9 years, and acting as the director for competitive programs at several studios, Amber is now the proud owner and director of Moving Different—Wilmington’s newest dance studio. She hopes that along with her amazing faculty, she can continue to shape young dancers into not only preprofessional artists, but also outstanding human beings in whatever future they choose to pursue.

Along with teaching and choreographing, Amber has always been a passionate advocate for young victims of sexual misconduct within the dance industry. Recently, she has been using her voice and platform to raise awareness and push for lasting change. Seeing the impact this has had in her own community, she wants to continue promoting education, accountability, and safer practices in dance spaces. Through her own studio, Amber is dedicated to fostering a secure, supportive environment where every dancer feels protected, respected, and empowered to grow.

Alyssa Logan

Alyssa Logan’s journey in dance began in Wilmington, NC, where her passion for performance was nurtured from a young age. Since the age of 11, Alyssa has worked under Amber’s guidance and honed her skills that she is lucky to now be able to pass on to the next generation of movers. This formative training laid the foundation for her distinctive choreography and teaching approach. Specializing in jazz, Alyssa brings a fresh energy to her classes where she emphasizes technique, confidence, and texture, while also encouraging dancers to embrace their unique styles. With her bubbly personality, Alyssa creates an inclusive, motivating environment for dancers of all ages. She connects effortlessly with young dancers, making their learning experience both fun and educational, and she inspires older, more advanced students to push their boundaries and refine their craft. Alyssa is thrilled to join Moving Different, bringing a youthful perspective to the team. Her enthusiasm and creativity promise to be a valued addition to the company’s bright future.

Pre-Professional Education

We provide top-tier training across a wide range of dance styles for students of all ages and experience levels. Dancers also have opportunities to explore specialized areas such as audition preparation, improvisation, and choreography conception. We celebrate each dancer’s strengths, help them find confidence in their individuality, and encourage them to step beyond their comfort zones. Our boutique studio setting allows for personalized instruction and meaningful one-on-one connections between students and teachers. It is important to us that our community remains family oriented and faith centered.

Class First, Rehearsals Second

Before we opened, we felt there was a gap in the market between recreational programs that focus on fun and participation, and highly competitive environments centered on numerous routines with extensive rehearsal schedules. We wanted to offer elite training to all students, even those who may not be interested in competing. While prioritizing the time and monetary investment into training, dancers build a solid foundation of strength, alignment, musicality, and artistry—skills that directly translate into competitive routines that need less rehearsal time. With this approach, we have seen the focus shift back to what matters most: growth, teamwork, and developing skilled, versatile dancers who truly understand their craft. We are able to celebrate wins inside of the classroom, just as much as we would in a competition setting.

Top Notch Facilities

In our studio, safety and cleanliness are always top priorities. Our spacious 40-foot-wide dance room features custom-built sprung flooring to provide maximum protection for both dancers and instructors. Because tumbling and jumping are central components of dance training, investing in quality flooring was essential when creating the space. To further support a healthy environment, our floors and all high-touch surfaces are sanitized regularly, helping prevent the spread of germs and keeping our community well throughout the season.
